1   METHOD

A list shall be compiled of serving councillors in seniority order (date they joined the Council) and record each Councillors training attendance and achievements.

Councillors who have served on the Council for a least two full years, completed, or are willing to complete Chairmanship Training and would like to be elected to the role of Mayor or Deputy Mayor to be placed on an Approved Mayoral Election List.

Councillors can be added to the approved list as they attain the appropriate criteria and Councillors can also ask to be removed from the list if they choose to.

Choosing Councillors for the Mayoral positions in March will allow an exchange of information between incoming and outgoing members and make the transition for the new Mayoral year more effective.

2.   MARCH COUNCIL MEETING

Once an Approved Mayoral Election list has been complied, Councillors should be called upon at a meeting, prior to the forthcoming Mayoral year, to nominate, in the first instance, one Councillor from the list to become the Mayor by way of a majority vote and another from the list to become the Deputy Mayor after a majority vote.

Prior to the meeting, any Councillor may approach any other Councillor and ask if they wish to be nominated for either post. This must be done before the nomination is put forward.

If they agree to be nominated, this needs to be communicated to the Clerk so that their name can be put on the agenda. Therefore, this needs to be done at least 10 working days before the March meeting.

3.   MAY ANNUAL TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

In accordance with Section 5 of the Standing Orders.

The nominations will be formalised by a show of hands.

For the following years, the Deputy Mayor, if willing to do so, should be automatically nominated for Mayor at the March meeting and a member from the approved list should be nominated for Deputy Mayor and both formalised at the May meeting.

The current Mayor can be nominated for a further term.

4.   ELECTION YEAR PROCESS.

Notification of nominations for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor shall be declared at the March meeting.

The names of nominees shall appear on the agenda for the April meeting immediately prior to the Annual Meeting.

At the April meeting, any nominees that are seconded will go forward for election at the Annual Meeting.

Unless no nominations are received, no names shall be put forward at the April meeting.
